Good Afternoon! How are you doing today? I have to say for myself vacillating between pretty good and fabulous. I’m asking you this question because we have a tendency to tune ourselves out when we really need to be listening inwards.
What are you talking about Adrienne? Glad you asked. I came across this thought as part of a personal coaching session and of course, being the overachiever that I am, I had to take it to the next level. Ready? Here we go …
Ever have those days where everything is just crazy? Waking up, getting dressed, having breakfast, traffic, radio stations, phones, work, coworkers, you get the idea. And what is the first you do as a re-action? Get a coffee, sweet, fried, chocolate, wine, cocktail, all of the above? How do I know? Been there, done that. And here’s the secret – what you really need to do is take that time that you would spend getting that quick fix and close the door, or go to your car, or step outside, and take that time to breathe. Get back in touch with yourself. See where your mind takes you. Feel what your body is saying to you. Does it really need that quick fix or is it need of something deeper, like a time out. Children are not the only ones who need a time out when things are gong a million miles an hour. We do too. We need to get off the crazy roller coaster of life when the track is finished, instead of staying on it ‘just one more time’.
While we might think it is better to push through that last thing we need to get done, deep down, our insides are screaming for a break And as adults, we need to acknowledge that very wise part of us and do what it is saying. That 5 minutes (or 2 or 3) of breathing and releasing will do so much for you. And it needs to be deep, belly breathing, where you blow your belly out like a balloon and then exhale longer than you inhale. Start with a 5 count inhale through your nose and a 7 count exhale through your mouth. You might even begin to yawn. Then work up to 10 and 15. Notice how your chest will open up and expand. See how much deeper your breath will get and the tension will leave your body.
This happened with me the other day. I cannot remember exactly what was going on, but I do remember all of a sudden taking in this really big breath and everything brightening up with the exhale. Sounds corny, I know, but the release really made me think about what was going on. I didn’t need that glass of wine, or that chocolate or that food in my mouth.
Tune inwards. It’s a beautiful place.
