Appetite is ‘the longing for a preferred food substance and is associated with conditioned reflexes such as salivation and secretion of stomach juices.’, according to Howard F. Loomis in the book Enzymes The Key to Health Vol. 1 The Fundamentals. I bet you wonder where I get my inspiration, he is one of them. He goes on to say that ‘While food preferences are determined by previous experience, genetic factors and dietary deficiencies, specific hungers often occur when the body needs certain substances. Human infants and primitive peoples usually prefer foods that are best for them. In one study, where babies were allowed to select their own foods, an infant with rickets at the beginning of the study cured himself by selecting large amounts of cod liver oil containing Vitamin D’.
Interesting, huh? What we are craving is what our bodies are deficient in. Crazy concept. Problem is, what we decipher our cravings to be is not what our bodies need many times these days. Just like Loomis said, genetics, previous experiences, media, all have had an impact on our decision making when it comes to our food choices. What do we love about babies? They are so pure. We know that they know what they need and their bodies intrinsically know what is needed to function naturally. That’s why we are seeing so much GERD and digestive issues with them these days. Their bodies don’t know what to do with chemicals instead of mother’s milk. Okay, wait, I am not chastising anyone on breastfeeding. What I am saying is that back int he day, we gave our babies goat milk, fresh, raw, goat milk when there were issues. Goat milk is the closest thing to mothers milk without the b vitamins. Simpler proteins to break down. That is why people with dairy issues can have goat milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream. It’s what I gave to my guys (plus DHA) when I stopped breast feeding, and they are crazy healthy.
My point is, if we listen to our bodies’ wants, we will see that they are also our bodies’ needs. That craving for salty? Our body is low in natural sodium. Not table salt, celery, kiwi, bake potato. Chocolate? Sulfur – eggs, sarsparilla. Also magnesium – nuts, seeds, fruit. When it comes to carbs or sweets, it is usually fresh fruit, or good fibers – brown rice, quinoa, avocado, walnuts, almonds, Brazil nuts, that it is looking for. And oh yes, fat! yes, our bodies do need fat.. Good fat. For example coconut oil, fish oil, avocado, nuts, extra virgin olive oil. Our bodies need fats to metabolize fat soluble vitamins. Our bodies need fat for brain function. Or bodies need fat to get rid of the bad fats. No, that does not mean you can go a bucket of fried chicken or ice cream or burgers and fries. those are the bad fats. i am talking about ingesting good fats 1 -2 tablespoons a day.
Just like the child who cured himself of rickets by getting the good fats with the Vitamin d, we can cure ourselves of our ailments by paying attention and educating ourselves to what our appetite is asking of us. Just by listening and ‘sacrificing the sugar (and the sugar free), the fast food, the ice cream/pizza, the junk food, the beer/wine/cocktails and making your own meals or choosing the ‘healthy side’ of the menu, your body might stop craving. And, your health will improve because of it. Die healthy, Live sick – your choice.
